Air Preheaters. A regenerative air preheater can reduce cold-end problems when installed instead of a recuperative air preheater on a new or existing boiler. In the regenerative air preheater design, heat transfer surfaces are below the acid dew point for much shorter periods of time.

Air preheaters raise the combustion air temperature. There are two basic types of air preheaters: recuperative and regenerative.

The recuperative type is similar in principle to a conventional heat exchanger with the hot flue gases on one side of the heat transfer surface and the cool air. Recuperative and regenerative air pre-heaters are vulnerable for plugging under certain specific conditions of operation of boiler.

A few of these conditions are design related and the others are operation oriented. Air pre-heater being the last heat transfer surface in the boiler it is subjected to the lowest temperature in boiler operation.

Minimum metal temperature at the cold end of a regenerative heater is slightly higher than in a recuperative design operating under the same condition. This is because regenerative type works very close to the counter flow, while that of recuperative is on cross flow where metal reaches the air inlet temperature.

*Conventional regenerative (e.g. Ljungström®) air heaters experience significant difficulties because of their rotating nature and the resulting high temperature differential between the metal elements and the flue gas.

As the air heater components rotate between hot flue gas and cold combustion air, the metal baskets are heated and cooled. A regenerative heat exchanger, or more commonly a regenerator, is a type of heat exchanger where heat from the hot fluid is intermittently stored in a thermal storage medium before it is transferred to the cold fluid.

To accomplish this the hot fluid is brought into contact with the heat storage medium, then the fluid is displaced with the cold fluid, which absorbs the heat. For your case, it is F for tubular air heater or F for regenerative ones.

When you have this not-to-exceed surface temperature plus having cold air inlet temperature then you can get minimum flue gas temperature by a simple heat-transfer calculation. The formula to show temp. relationships is below: Twall = Tair + (Tgas - Tair)/(1 + Kair/Kgas).
